Welcome to Steilacoom
Historical waterfront town with expansive views of Puget Sound
Washington’s oldest town has a quaint, community feel. It’s close to the more bustling hubs of Tacoma and Lakewood but feels like a small town preserved in the amber of time. It’s a wonderful place to live with a small-town charm, perfect for those who enjoy an easier pace of life surrounded by beauty. With arguably the best and most expansive views of the Puget Sound, Steilacoom is a sight to behold.
Steilacoom is a city of firsts that’s full of historic landmarks. It was the first town to be incorporated in Washington State, the first school in Pierce County, and the first public library in Washington Territory. Its founders hoped it would become the next bustling hub of industry like San Francisco. Over time, however, Tacoma and Seattle began to overshadow it, and it has found its place in history as a charming town with a storied past.
The area is made up primarily of older Craftsman-style homes. However, there have been a number of new constructions in Steilacoom, though even these new homes feel like they fit with the history and quaint charm of the town.

Its residents range from school-age children in young families to empty-nesting retirees. The town draws people who love to feel connected to their neighbors while still being close to the conveniences of larger towns.
